In Can Animals be Moral?, philosopher Mark Rowlands examines the reasoning of philosophers and scientists on this question--ranging from Aristotle and Kant to Hume and Darwin--and reveals that their arguments fall far short of compelling. The basic argument against moral behavior in animals is that humans have capabilities that animals lack. We can reflect on our motivations, formulate abstract principles that allow that allow us to judge right from wrong. For an actor to be moral, he or she must be able scrutinize their motivations and actions. No animal can do these things--no animal is moral. Rowland naturally agrees that humans possess a moral consciousness that no animal can rival, but he argues that it is not necessary for an individual to have the ability to reflect on his or her motives to be moral. Animals can't do all that we can do, but they can act on the basis of some moral reasons--basic moral reasons involving concern for others. And when they do this, they are doing just what we do when we act on the basis of these reasons: They are acting morally.

About the Author

Mark Rowlands is Professor of Philosophy at the University of Miami. He is the author of fourteen books, translated into more than twenty languages. His autobiography, The Philosopher and the Wolf was published in 2008, and became an international bestseller.

A Philosophically Rigourous Defence

I was pleasantly surprised when I started reading this book. There are a few philosophers and non-philosophers alike who have come to the conclusion that animals in fact can act from moral reasons. Unfortunately, there don't seem to be any good answers to the question of how animals can be said to do good deeds but also not be held responsible when they fail to do such deeds. The obvious answer is that they don't have the ability to consider whether they have any moral reasons to act in any given situation;they can't have thoughts about whether they should help somebody in need of aid for example. This then leads us to question: why would we want to consider their action 'moral'? If actions are not justified by moral deliberation then these actions don't appear to be 'moral'. So the actions of animals are simply in accordance with their desires and these actions are sometimes coincidentally aligned with the appropriate moral action.
Rowlands produces a substantial nuanced argument to show us that while animals may not deliberate on whether an action is morally justified, they can still be said to be acting morally. He does this by arguing that this conception of moral action that includes a necessary component of deliberation is misguided. While such deliberation would be necessary for one to be considered a moral agent it is not necessary to be a moral 'subject' - a creature capable of acting from moral reasons. An excellent book, both philosophically complex and enjoyably readable. Perhaps what I enjoyed most about it is that the after a short survey of the literature (shorter than is ordinarily seen) a clear argument developed over the length of the book. There were no tangential chapters on minor problems or related issues, just the main argument dealing with the problem at hand. Also, unrelated to the content, it is nice to find a philosophy book that has a cover illustration which isn't a abstract muddle of colour or drab painting!

The biological view of morality, which allows the interpretation of behavior, both human and animal. Paraphrasing one of the first works of Mark Rououlants "Animals Like Us" book leaves you finish by the belief that "we may have moral because we are animals." I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to think about what is the meaning of thw word "animal" . Even (perhaps especially)to those people that their religion compels them to put humans on a pedestal "crowned" with morality, as a privilege.

About the Author
David Starkey is Professor of English and Director of the Creative Writing Program at Santa Barbara City College.  He is the editor of two collections of creative writing pedagogy, Teaching Writing Creatively (1998) and Genre by Example: Writing What We Teach (2001), and he has been active in all four genres.  His poetry collections include Adventures of the Minor Poet (2007), Ways of Being Dead: New and Selected Poems (2006), and Fear of Everything (2000).  His fiction has appeared in American Literary Review, Rio Grande Review, Sou’wester and in the anthology Blue Cathedral: Contemporary Fiction for the New Millennium.  His creative nonfiction has been published in Cimarron Review, Gulf Stream Magazine, Tampa Review, and in the book Living Blue in the Red States (2007), which he edited.  His plays have been produced in New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, Seattle, Minneapolis, Toronto, and elsewhere.

Could Have Been Great

There aren't a lot of creative writing texts that cover all four genres out there, and "Creative Writing: Four Genres in Brief" seemed a promising, inexpensive option to assign for my college creative writing class. The discussions of craft are solid and each section is followed by a checklist that my students found useful. Each chapter includes three opening examples that the craft lessons refer back to in order to illustrate their points, and I found this to be very clear and effective. My two main complaints have to do with the selection of plays and editorial problems with the book. There are only 7 plays in this book (by contrast, there are 26 poems, 14 stories, and 13 essays). I'm guessing the decision to include so few plays was made because the plays take up more pages than the entries in the other genres, but the result is a very limited (and somewhat lackluster) selection of dramatic works. A more annoying issue was the rather embarrassing extent of typographical errors in this book. There are small typos here and there, and at one point, a whole paragraph is repeated verbatim. The complete table of contents in the front matter is correct, but there is also an abbreviated table of contents inside the front cover, and this table of contents contains the incorrect page numbers! Besides being irksome, these typos make it hard to make the case to students that they should treat their writing with care and precision. Why do so when the very textbook they've paid almost $40 for appears not to have been proofread?! With a better/wider selection of plays and some good proofreading/copyediting, this could have been a fantastic book, so it's really too bad.

A Bit Better Than Adequate

I'm using this for a beginning level creative writing class. I like how quickly each section covers the basics, allowing students more writing time than reading time. I find, however, that I have to supplement with additional samples and information, particularly in the creative non-fiction section. The material on poetic forms is well done. Overall, it's relatively inexpensive, unlike many creative writing textbooks, clear, and helpful.

About the Author
Reinhard Bonnke is the founder of the international ministry Christ for all Nations, which has recorded 55 million documented decisions for Jesus Christ in the first ten years of the new millennium. Sound thinking, keen spiritual insight, doctrinal integrity.

This book, TAKING ACTION by Reinhard Bonnke, is full of wisdom, sound thinking, keen spiritual insight, doctrinal integrity.

-Do you have questions about how the Holy Spirit operates?
-Are you looking for guidance and wondering if you're hearing God correctly?
-Have you ever had a bad experience with the supernatural gifts?
-Do you wonder why there are so many problems when people try to operate in the spiritual gifts?
-Is there such a thing as God's power, in action, in our lives?
-Can we be sane and sober minded and yet powerful people of God?

If you have ever asked any of of these questions, or all of of them, then you'll want to read this book.

My copy is completely marked up with notes and exclamation points and underlining unlimited! Reinhard Bonnke writes with authority, confidence, and conviction, yes; but it's balanced with humility and an understated ego. You'll find some practical advice in here and good sound counsel. There's a light humorous touch, at times, and that is so welcome when you're reading through weighty matters.I can't tell you the last time I respected a Christian author so highly!

I particularly loved the chapter on FAITH, and Bonnke is right: "there is no subject that calls for explanation from the Scriptures more than faith and the gift of faith. We particularly want to bring help on this matter." Have you ever had questions about how, exactly, you're supposed to "move mountains" with faith? Bonnke is tackling the outrageous claims of Christ, and he doesn't shy away from a single one! He will warn you, though, about what we have already seen happen with these explosive subjects: "Now, about doing the impossible- awful mistakes have been made."You see? The man is not afraid to deal with reality even when discussing the supernatural.

Bonnke is traversing difficult waters but still centering in on the soundness and reliability of God's Word and God's love. He writes about miracles and powerful things that can take place when we walk with God, but "the object is not to pull off a few sensational wonders, like stage tricks, but the redemption of the world."

This author visibly preaches God, as evidenced by his worldwide ministry; but he preaches our responsibility in partnering with God as well: obedience is a key word throughout the book. You won't find snake handlers and magicians and crooked, corrupt Personalities proclaiming that word, first. Bonnke writes, "Note carefully that anointing is not a kind of emotional pleasure, but it comes into activity when we serve."(Italics mine)

But along with service and obedience and discipline, you can expect anointing and power to live this life! And Bonnke will carefully explain how this occurs, how the Gifts operate, how to wisely use them, and what, exactly, they are. Expect to learn some Greek and Hebrew, expect to understand the context of Scriptural passages- in fact, expect to realize you need to study the Bible more, not just skim it!

I'm not sure the world will note the wisdom in this book. But if you read this, you will find a world of life changing possibilities waiting to be explored-- if you seriously consider whether or not there's truth in not only what he says, but in what God says is possible.

Unconquerable through the Holy Spirit

Reinhard Bonnke could arguably be one of the most wanted men in the kingdom of darkness: Witches hunt him down, sorcerers cast spells against him, and occultists perform satanic rituals to hinder him and his powerful evangelical ministry, Christ for All Nations.

No worries. Bonnke's detailed study on the gifts and power of the Holy Spirit in his book, "Taking Action," explains why the enemy's attempts are "futile against...[this] blood-bought child of God." Bonnke also stresses that the anointing is for every believer and not for a select few or elite crowd (Joel 2:28).

"Taking Action" is flooded with scriptures, testimonies and detailed research down to the Greek language. If you're big on cross-referencing, I suggest keeping a Bible nearby while reading, and especially when coming across controversial topics such as speaking in tongues, counterfeit (satanic) gifts and exorcising demons to name a few.

Bonnke's in-depth focus on each gift of the Spirit is quite impressive. Though, I do not completely agree on all viewpoints. In the chapter on discernment, Bonnke assumes that Christians cannot have a demon: "If our lives are hidden with Christ in God, and we have a demon, then it would mean that the demon hidden in us is also hidden in God! That is unthinkable."

We are all made up of three parts. Our spirit belongs to God but our soul and body can most definitely be affected by demonic spirits (1 Thessalonians 5:23). Depending on the circumstances (open doors due to sin for example), the spirit-filled Christian has the potential of becoming demonically oppressed (not possessed).

Jesus did a whole lot of healings and deliverances (among other things) that were not written in the Bible (John 21:25). Accompanied with the Word of God, the Holy Spirit is able to reveal deep and secret things (Daniel 2:22) about demonic oppression, witchcraft attacks, deliverance strategies and even expose the enemies' devices (2 Corinthians 2:11).

For sure, Bonnke is correct when he writes that "...we fight [demons] by preaching the Word of truth." And regardless of our differences, Bonnke's zeal for the Word of God is evident as he educates his readers on how to move in the anointing and tap into the various gifts God offers His children. Grab yourself a copy and learn what it means to be unconquerable through the Holy Spirit.

Biblically Solid and Timely

"Take Action" by Reinhard Bonnke is book based on sound biblical teaching, and offers a timely message to all who follow Christ. I must admit, I was a bit skeptical of this book going into it. I've seen and read many sensational misapplications of the Gifts of the Spirit, but after reading through Bonnke's teaching on the matter I am greatly encouraged that there are Charismatic leaders who are boldly standing for the full-message of the Bible.

The first part of this book gives some basic ground rules for the gifts, which provide a nice primer for those who may not have grown up with this kind of teaching in their churches. Bonnke basically asserts, far more eloquently than I am here, that all we do within the Gifts of the Spirit should be done within the context of God's wisdom and God's love. Without these two foundations, any action we take on behalf of God will be nothing more than, as the Apostle Paul would say, a "clanging symbol". The second part of the book then goes on to explain each of the individual Gifts of the Spirit.

I am writing this review on the day of horrific shootings in Aurora Colorado, a town and people for whom my heart breaks. It is horrific events such as this that make a book like this, explaining the Gifts of the Spirit, so timely. Our world needs a Church that is filled the Holy Spirit and acts on the gifts He gives us.

The Profound Legacy of the Late David Flynn

I had never heard of this Christian genius until one of my favorite authors and Bible teachers, Dr. Thomas Horn highly recommended his monumental work that he was privileged to publish subsequent to David Flynn's untimely death. On Dr. Horn's website he has made this compilation available... and to my astonished awe I can only say that my world has changed due to the clear and comprehensive revelation into ancient and deep mysteries that the Holy Spirit of GOD had given to this humble servant of the Most High.

The 515 page volume is written in a highly readable yet quite challenging manner, with each of the 37 total chapters in both books footnoted at the end of each chapter with reference resources listed. There are extensive photos, diagrams, maps, historical artwork, and even formulas that demonstrate the depth of his brilliant scholarship and profound insight.

He is in the Presence of ABBA Father, who clearly welcomed him -at such a young age with "Well done, good and faithful servant; you were faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of your LORD."

I have done a more thorough review of both books- Temple at the Center of Time, & Cydonia: The Secret Chronicles of Mars on my personal Weblog at zionsgate (wordpress) with images, video links, and worship music. As deep as this volume is, I have already felt compelled to start at the beginning again, and more carefully dig into this present truth teaching with focus on the comprehensive footnote sources. You will share in the exhilaration of discovery and be humbled in the greater Scriptural illumination it provides as you prayerfully study this incredible legacy of our dear brother in Christ, David Flynn.

All Christians should read this!

I ordered the hard copy of this collection online, but not wanting to wait on shipping I also purchased the Kindle edition (Thanks Amazon). At first I found Mr.Flynn's writings a bit hard to understand. This work shows how remarkable his thinking abilities are. But after skipping through a few chapters in the first book of this collection and eventually all-the-way through to the second book (Cydonia: the Secret Chronicles of Mars) I began to get a better understanding of how he writes and his skills on interpretation. If you find yourself a little perplexed with all the very extended detailed sources he quotes in the beginning of his books, I'd suggest skipping to the last few chapters and then backing up and re-reading from the start. This helped me to stay on track and get a better understanding of his knowledge. His books are not a hard read, don't get me wrong. I'm not a college grad nor someone with a remarkable IQ so I do sometimes struggle with complicated writings especially on ancient pagan gods and Roman/Greek/Babylonian paganism. There are so many mythological beings written about in history it's easy (for me) to get them mixed up and become confused as to whom is who or what). Once I skipped through to the last few chapters and got a better understanding as to what all this research was leading to then the whole book became clear. Mr.Flynn surely has a gift of understanding. He sees and depicts things from ancient writings and glyph's that no one to my knowledge could match. Over the past few years I've spent hundreds of dollars on books, manuscripts, DVD's and many other resources trying to acquire a better understanding of all these supernatural and esoteric events and doctrines. I've long since had an overwhelming interest in aliens/grays, and what is really going on in the secret societies. After all, why so much hard work on their part seeing that I/we (Christians) know they loose! I've always figured if they were intelligent enough to be illuminated then surly they'd be smart enough to read and comprehend the Holy Bible and thus see that Satan and his followers loose badly. But the "strong delusion" quoted from the Holy Writ also comes to mind. PRAISE be to GOD ALMIGHTY for HIS Ways are so much Higher! I'm not finished reading the first book in this collection so I won't comment on it yet but I still highly recommend both books to anyone who would like to know more about such things and I truly doubt you will find it anywhere else that is so well researched and illustrated. I only wished I'd found these years ago I could have saved a lot of money and in some cases what I feel was wasted time. I know I will be reading and studying both books repeatedly. I would also recommend watching the lectures he made concerning the information in his books. As an end-note I would like to mention how heart felt I am to his family and loved ones at his passing this year. And a very big thank you to those who compiled the collection and posted it for sale. I doubt, without this effort,I would have ever come to know these outstanding works and how beneficial to the public they truly are.
I hope this review Blesses anyone who finds it.

Great read! I ordered both Kindle and paperback

This is a great read. Intellectually stimulating - and it appears to be well researched. If this is food for thought, your brain may put on some weight. Both books in THE DAVID FLYNN COLLECTION (TEMPLE AT THE CENTER OF TIME, and CYDONIA: THE SECRET CHRONICLES OF MARS) potentially fill in a lot of what the Bible leaves out. Revealing concerning the mystery schools...

I have wanted to read CYDONIA: TSCOM for some time, but couldn't justify $75 for a 260 page book. It's unfortunate that it apparently took David Flynn's death for it to become affordable ($9.95 for Kindle). But David is OK with that as he is with the Lord now. Read the Kindle version on a 15.6" portable PC. I have not been satisfied with the Kindle software for PC. I am not always hooked up to Internet - Amazon Kindle led me to believe they were retaining corrections (for another book not David's). They lost about 40 of them - that was the end of that dance. I eventually ordered this book in paperback; it is excellent.
