An AWESOME Book

I recently finished Half Way Home by Hugh Howey and absolutely loved it!!! Hugh Howey is a relatively new author who I think has tons of potential. I've also read the other books by him, the Molly Fide series, and really enjoyed them too. I really can't say enough good things about them.

Half Way Home is set in a futuristic world where colonies of people are sent out to explore planets and are born as full grown adults. We follow a group of young people who were "born" too soon, only halfway through their training for their jobs in the new colony. The main character, Porter, struggles with his own emotions as he accidently becomes the leader of a group that has broken off from the main colony. This second group goes on an exploration mission and discovers the true, dark reason their mission was nearly aborted.

I really like the way the plot and the characters were developed. In some books by other authors I've read, I've felt I didn't get to know the people well enough. In this book, I really felt that I knew Porter and Kelvin and Tarsi. I felt their pain, their losses, and their happiness. I loved the pacing as well. The story didn't move too fast that your head was spinning, but I never felt it dragged. I hate to use this old line, but here it is: I laughed, I cried, I loved it!!!

I would recommend this book to older teens and adults. There are some pretty mature themes in this book, such as homosexuality, abortion, and fairly graphic death. I would only recommend this book to mature people who would be able to handle this.

This book is definitely unique. I have a hard time coming up with a point of comparison in books. This book is remotely similar to Star Trek, but even that is a stretch. It is about exploring a new planet with new creatures and a "crew" of sorts, but it is definitely different and worth reading. It is not only well-written, but thought provoking as well. It's a "make you think" book, one that I would certainly read again.

I'm Hooked On Howey!

After reading all 5 "Wool" books (and loving them), I decided to read another book by Hugh Howey. I chose "Half Way Home" and I think it's another gem. The concept of this book is awesome and it's also beautifully written. The attempted human colonization of a distant planet has been covered many times by many authors, but not quite like this. Think "Lord of the Flies on a Hostile Planet" and you will get some feel for this book. I've been reading SciFi for over 50 years and I found "Half Way Home" to be exceptional. Pass me a vinnie cutlet and some bombfruit!

Hugh Howey Can Tell A Story!

Are in into Sci-Fi? I can truely say it's not my favorite genre of books but, Hugh Howey is quickly turning me into a Sci-Fi lover.
I was first sucked into Hugh's writing with the Molly Fyde series. Those stories are awesome and I've yet to finish the last two books. (Shame on me)

Recently I read Howey's "Half Way Home", and I could not believe how much of a story Hugh put into this small novel. I was lost in the first few pages, as per usual with Hugh's books. The adventure begins immediately. Don your spacesuit and your mode of travel and let's go for a ride.

We are on a planet that was to be inhabited by a race of humans planted there. They are grown in vats, and each taught a certain occupation that will help on their goal to "settle" the planet and make it home. Only this time there is a problem and this group is aborted at age 15. Only half grown. Only half trained. Many die a fiery death. But a group of teens make it out alive and must now figure out how to manage, how to cope, how to live and learn on their new home.

I encountered young people with the perservence to try. No matter what odds lay ahead they were hell bent on attacking them head on. You'll meet Vinnie's in this story, a strange animal that I'd love to go for a ride on, and trees a mile or more high. You'll encounter metal worms that if you happen to be in their path, you'll be mincemeat. And you will learn what friendship means and the will of survival.

The story just overflowed with adventure, trials and tribulations and best of all a great lesson to be learned on being different, being determined and surviving against all odds.

Hugh Howey has done it again with an excellent story that I will definitely reread.

Now, I ask...how is the group doing? What's going on in their lives. How's the population now? I think I need another story from those that survived. :)

the author does an excellent job in making even some of the more "over-the-top" ...

As noted in the review posted prior to mine, this tale of erotic mental and physical transformation has elements which will NOT be to everyone's taste, and while certain aspects were also not "my cup of tea" , the author does an excellent job in making even some of the more "over-the-top" elements seem sexy. The descriptions are vivid but not explicitly graphic, with enough detail to prove stimulating. The writing shines in the ability to portray "non-traditional" characters with bodies that don't conform to mainstream beauty standards as still sexy and erotic in the intimacy scenes. The biggest criticism might be the story does involve some heavy academic verbiage which proved a little distracting for someone (like me) who simply doesn't have the background to catch all the references. But that didn't prevent my ultimate enjoyment.

Brilliant and twisted

Brilliant and twisted, but a warning is needed. If you want a story about a sexy bimbo...look elsewhere. If you want a story where a woman becomes sort of 'sexy plump' and leaves it at that, then find it some other place. THIS is a story where a sexy, blond fashion plate slowly becomes a genus...but also a staggeringly obese, gluttonous slob. It's a bit over the top, but if it's your cup of tea...then you'll be satisfied. VERY well written (no stumbling, ham-handed crap here) and obviously a labor of love. Also, I should note that this story has a "happy" ending, where our obese heroine and her beau (also a fat genus) are obviously in love with each other.

Very interesting dialogue, very intelligently stated theories and philosophy laid out amongst a transformation into the woman of his dreams. Letting yourself read and imagine if a ring could change someone into exactly what you want, maybe even more perfect than one can believe or want.

This is a truly amazing story that sets aside an individual who has fought through poverty, violence, absolute survival and yet underneath this is the real story. A story of a genuine person who cares for his friends, his family. Is charitable and kind and deserving of a good break. It's rewarding to see that this book has finally been published to tell a hard hitting yet wonderful story. Fantastic read, surely a TV or film around the corner

Bettie Page, the world's greatest pinup

I bought this book for my husband's birthday last year; he has always thought Bettie Page was great, and he is the one who enlightened me about her. As an artist, I was drawn to her style and unpretentiousness, and have drawn her twice so far.

This book is well-written and leads the reader through Bettie's life; from her start and to her present day in a respectful and fascinating manner. I came away from this book understnanding the appeal she had to men, and wanting to draw her portraits over and over.

Bettie Page Has Become a True Historical Icon

For men of a certain age, Bettie Page was one of the most beautiful women of the 1950's Era. She wasn't a big Hollywood movie star, but she represented the dream girl next door. She was beautiful but more than that, she was nice. She may have posed for pin-up pictures in bikinis, skimpy underwear and nude, but she looked like she was playing at the job. If the picture was a fetish photo she appeared to be giggling, or at least about to giggle at the absurdity of the poses she was being photographed in. She was just as happy posing for a mostly male photography club at a public beach as she was posing for professional photographer. She typified the amateur fun loving model. She was beautiful but refused to take her beauty seriously. Her big, warm smile would light a dark room. Her happiness was contagious. She just was. Posing for pin-up pictures was fun for her.
It was good clean fun, not anything dirty or unseemly. She was like Eve in the Garden of Eden being tempted by the serpent but coming through the temptations untouched and with snapshots to prove it. She was a great play actor enjoying herself while being the center of attention and mildly teasing men through her photographic persona. Some of the men's imaginations may have been in the gutter, but that wasn't her fault. She was happy little Miss Sunshine.
She was a nature girl. She was a sun worshipper and everyone at the time believed she was a happy nudist and she wasn't at all shy about showing her healthy body. Cameras loved Bettie. This is one of the best collections of her work that has been published. Most of the pulp magazines she appeared in are in the final process of dissolving because of the cheap sulfur filled paper they were printed on. Here is a well done, high quality coffee table collection of many of the magazine covers on which the image of her smile and healthy body graced.
It's nice to see that the Bettie Page hairdo is becoming popular again 60 years after she made it famous. This book will send men of the 1950's back to their dreamy youth and the innocence that was the United States before Vietnam and the radical 1960's changed America forever. Long live Bettie Page via the art and cartoon icon she has since become and which is also documented in this excellent bit of visual history. It's nice to read and see what Bettie thought about her world as well. The hand written introduction from her was a nice touch. The long-hand note seems so Bettie Page.

Within moments after my wife proposed gifting this book to our business partner last Spring, I seized it for myself. She had run across the only copy left in one of those funky shops which cater to the growing interest in cultural icons.
The authors, Karen Essex and James L. Swanson, render a definitive biography of one of the most enigmatic figures of our memory. Their slick 288 page paperback version lovingly portrays the images and life of Bettie page. You can take this book two ways:
On the coffee table, it presents a seductive collection of family photographs and pulp covers documenting the pin-up icon.
In bed, it seduces you to learn about the studious young woman who triumphed over family heartbreak to become a legend.
In the Fifties, I was one of the multitude of pre-adolescent boys who furtively witnessed her near-perfect body and impish smile - without knowing who she was. Now, more than forty years since her last session, Essex and Swanson answer some of the questions and heap on plenty of deja vu in the process.
The authors expose a life of someone who is noble and genuine. The "real" Bettie Page turns out to as fascinating as her ubiquitous image. Secretarial stints, jobs in Hati, persistent self-improvement and disappointing husbands propel her into a series of vicissitudes worthy of a Henry Fielding novel. Amid the rich and varied photographs, drawings and memorabilia, Essex and Swanson weave an engaging tale of someone quite surprising. Her guileless and genuine approach to life are almost Zen-like when viewed from our age of media hype and agents. Here is the story of a bright, beautiful, autonomous loner who deals directly with her life, shunning pretense, flattery and victimhood.
