USS INDEPENDENCE CVL-22, A War Diary of the Nation's First Dedicated Night Carrier ("Enhanced Edition II")
This is a comprehensive history of a fast WWII aircraft carrier, and her air groups. The book details the ship from concept through construction, launching, outfitting, shakedown and entry into the great Pacific war, where the CVL-22 would earn Eight Battle Stars. CVL-22 participated in strikes against Japanese held Marcus and Wake Islands, then Rabaul on its way to the Gilbert Islands.
After healing from extensive torpedo damage off Tarawa, USS Independence reemerged as our nation's first dedicated night carrier. Follow the story of the ship and her aviators in action against the Japanese Empire in the Philippines, Okinawa, Indochina, and onward to the waters off Japan.
Squadrons that flew off the USS Independence included: VF-6, VF-21, VT-21, VC-22, VF-22, VT-22, VF-27, VT-27, VFN-41, VTN-41, VF-46, VT-46 (and VF-33 for one day at Rabaul).
First released at the ship's reunion in September 2011 the book has been extremely well received by the crew members and their families. This is a revised "Enhanced Edition II" with 89 additional pages (from the First Edition). The glossy hardcover 8.5" X 11" book has roughly 350 photos, and 40 maps, charts and diagrams and an extensive index.

About the Author
John G. Lambert joined the US Naval Reserve and served aboard the (Essex Class) aircraft carrier USS Bon Homme Richard, CVA-31, in 1965-1966 on a West-Pac for 9 months, as an Avionics Technician in VAW-11.
With keen interest in the sea, he surfed on the west coast, and later became an advanced scuba diver. Hobbies were diversified from boating to water skiing, snow skiing and photography.
He learned to fly in 1970, then purchased plans, and built his own plane, a Burt Rutan designed VariEze. He raced it, and flew it from coast-to-coast and border-to-border. A member of the EAA, he headed up a experimental aircraft builders group in San Diego for a number of years, and became both active with (and historian of) an experimental aircraft racing group.
With his background in the navy, and aviation, he wrote a book on the history of the WWII aircraft carrier USS Independence, CVL-22, at the request of the ship's Reunion Group.
The book has involved approx. 9 years of research, with trips across the nation to places including NARA - The National Archives in College Park MD, and NARA San Bruno CA, the Naval Air Museum in Pensacola, Tailhook Association in San Diego, to name a few. First released in 2011, with file changes made since for inclusion of additional historical data and photos.
John was invited to join Dr. James Delgado on the joint NOAA / Navy / Boeing / Coda Octopus mission to obtain 3D side scan sonar images of the USS Independence on the bottom of the Pacific off Half Moon Bay California in 2015.

An excellent narative about the ship and it's men

I have been anticipating the book ever since John Lambert contacted me about using my brother's diary. The book is everything I hoped it would be. It is filled with details about the ship and the struggles of the men to fight her. I especially appreciate the way that John Lambert has worked in the story of the enlisted men who kept the ship going and the planes flying. The story of CVL 22 is an untold story until now. It is my hope that the men who sailed and fought her as well as their families will be able to enjoy the story and that many others will learn to appreciate their sacrifice. The book is well written and is difficult to put down.

Extraordinary "war" book! Well-researched.

I know the author, John Lambert, and can attest to the incredible amount of research that went into bringing this fine work to publication. Over four years of intense research, including travelling from coast to coast, gathering material and interviewing many of the surviving pilots, officers and seamen who fought from the deck of this mighty ship.
Anyone interested in the War in the Pacific will love this book. And, if you have an interest in the "Mighty I" in particular, you'll be doubly rewarded. I doubt there's a more thorough, well-written, reference work anywhere. It is truly a tribute to those who served but did not return.

The War Record of USS INDEPENDENCE!

Wow and Double Wow! There are books and then there are labors of love. John Lambert's USS INDEPENDENCE CVL-22 clearly fits in the later category. Sub-titled A WAR DIARY OF THE NATION'S FIRST DEDICATED NIGHT CARRIER, It is one of the most detailed aircraft carrier histories I've ever come across...and a wonderful tribute to the brave men who served on and flew from the 'Mighty I.'
Clocking in at 834(!) pages, Lambert's book supplies a day-to-day chronicle of CVL-22's life and times. INDEPENDENCE started life as the light cruiser AMSTERDAM but was then converted to a light carrier. CVL-22 subsequently saw combat in 1943, '44 and '45, deploying various Air Groups. At war's end, it ferried servicemen home as part of the 'Magic Carpet' operation. It was utilized as a test vessel at the July 1946 Bikini Atoll A-bomb tests and was later expended as a target for Navy weapons in 1951. CVL-22 earned eight battle stars for its Pacific service.
The book interweaves deck logs, ships' logs, personal diaries and first-person reminiscences to tell INDEPENDENCE'S story. Along with providing a thorough accounting of CVL-22's career, Lambert's book is bursting with hundreds of photographs, diagrams and maps that showcase every aspect of its life - construction, crew, air groups, battle scenes, etc.
USS INDEPENDENCE CVL-22 sets the standard for carrier histories. Thorough, readable and well-illustrated, Lambert's book is a compelling account of one carrier's war in the Pacific. Highly recommended.
