William Blacker lived in Romania from 1996 to 2004. He now divides his time between England, Italy and Romania. He has contributed articles and photographs to the Daily Telegraph, Ecologist, Art Newspaper and The Times.

Enchanting to the end

This is a really fabulous book all about the end of real Romanian tradition. It is quite funny as the time he came to Romania and I came were fairly close. He went and lived the Romanian peasant life, complete with the outfit and homemade shoes and saw and felt the Romanian life first hand.
This is a wonderful book against progress. It is a really good read. Even Prince Charles tried in Europe to preserve the way of life here as he wanted to save some 'Real Culture' for others to see.
Read this book - you will be pleased you did.

A rare find. I nominate it for the best book nobody has heard of.

It would be nice to be able to change my title to the best book everybody is talking about.
If you are remotely interested Eastern Europe, but don't know where to start, this is a wonderful book. It was interesting from cover to cover. So much so that I put 'going to Romania' on my bucket list. It is not exactly a history book, but the story of the author's account of falling in love with a country, the elderly, childless, old world Romanian couple that took him in, and a beautiful gypsy woman. Who could ask for more?

A mini vacation on every page...

This is absolutely my favorite book, and truly (as other reviewers said) a rare find. It is written in first person by a man who is deeply in love with rural Romania, and-- once you make it past the first chapter or so-- his love for the lifestyle and culture permeates every paragraph. He wants a quiet life, and he makes no apologies for it, nor does he interject unnecessary drama to force the plot. I disagree with one of the reviewers, however, who said this wasn't a piece of classic literature. Truly, there wasn't a single page that didn't hold some enchantment for me, and I can't remember EVER thinking that about a book-- but I like quiet, rural communities, and nature, so I'm exactly the audience this author is targeting. No, it's not a dramatic page turner, but I find myself not wanting to put it down, nonetheless. Every page is like a mini vacation. The plot is subtle, but compelling and solid. The scenery is stunningly picturesque and, at the same time, deeply personal. The relationships are genuine. It is also quite informative, with lots of language and detail sprinkled throughout, without ever-- not even for a single moment-- feeling like a textbook. The narrator's strength of character also really shines through, without being overly dramatic, cheeky, exciting, or clever. He's approachable, likable, and I don't mind being "stuck in his head" for the ride.
It's just a slow, easy, darn good read, something to be relished page by page.
This book isn't even available on the US Amazon, which is sad, but not surprising. I found it by searching online for a book about rural Romania and, thankfully, the UK Amazon was able to send it to me. It was worth the trouble.
If you're looking to escape to the country and a simpler, quieter way of life, order this book. You won't be disappointed.
