Sultan Tales

I have read a number of books about this period of Zanzibar' history. I found Judy Aldrick's contribution to be very informative. Her in-depth presentation of day to day Zanzibar was excellent. Much of the book actually focuses less on Peer Dewjee and more on the history of the Sultans during the period of Dewjee's life. The first half of the book only speculates on what Peer Dewjee "might" have been doing at the time. That said, this was necessary with the limited records made available. None the less, the speculation still served to weave a good portrait of the times and the life style of the Indian community in Zanzibar was during this period. I thoroughly enjoyable book. A side note: Having read Judy other book, The Fannin Papers, I found a noticeable improvement in her writing style and the flow with this book. I look forward to her next project.

About the Author

Dr. Anne Rose is the Coordinator of the Anticoagulation Stewardship Program at the University of Wisconsin Hospital and Health System (UW Health) located in Madison, Wisconsin. Dr. Rose received her PharmD degree from Butler University. During her post graduate training she completed a PGY-1 pharmacy residency at the Lovell Federal Health Care Center in North Chicago, Illinois. In her current position, Dr. Rose coordinates all anticoagulation related safety, quality, decision support and performance improvement initiatives across UW Health. In addition to coordinating the anticoagulation program, she also practices clinically in the areas of cardiology and cardiothoracic surgery at the University of Wisconsin Hospital and in anticoagulation management at the UW Health Anticoagulation Clinic. In 2011, her Anticoagulation Stewardship Program received the Award for Excellence in Medication-Use Safety from the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists Research and Education Foundation for pharmacist led initiatives in improving patient care.

About the Author
Dr. Naeim has over 25 years practice in bone marrow pathology with several years of experience in flow cytometry. He is the author of numerous research articles and an established Elsevier author. He is a hematopathologist and an internationally known expert in pathology of bone marrow disorders. He is currently the Head of Hematopathology and the Director of Hematopathology Fellowship program at David Geffen School of Medicine, UCLA.

Good reference book

I am a general anatomic pathologist working in all types of cases. Recently, I had a strange case of skin biopsy. Clinically, dermatologist thought that this 1.5 cm plaque could be BCC or SCC. Histologically there is a heavy lymphoid infiltration in the dermis without epidermal involvement. My initial impression is benign lymphoid hyperplasia because the histology shows some centrocytes and centroblasts like cells in the background of small mature lymphocytes with several normal follicles. The pattern is not commensurate with the common cutaneous T-cell lymphoma. Anyway, I ordered an initial immuno panel to exclude epithelial lesion and cutaneous T-cell lymphoma. The result confirms that this is a lymphoid proliferative lesion but not a T-cell lymphoma. More immunostains point it out that this may be a B-cell lesion because lesional cells are diffusely and intensely positive for CD20. I had a 2001 version of WHO Tumours of Haematopoietic and Lymphoid Tissues which did not cover this entity. Fortunately my institution has the most recent version (2013) of Atlas of Hematopathology, in which there is a Chapter (40) "Primary Cutaneous B-cell lymphomas". I read the book and found what I missed. I missed irregular and "inside-out" follicles, which could be a red flag for malignancy other than benign hyperplasia. With the aide of the full immuno panel and cytogenetic studies (IgH and Igkappa gene arrangement with normal Iglampda), final diagnosis of "Primary Cutaneous Follicle Center Lymphoma" was made. The case was sent to an expert consultant who concurs with the diagnosis. Another case was a patient with hx of Hodgkin lymphoma and new finding of jejunal mass. Clinical DDX include carcinoma vs. Hodgkin lymphoma. Guess what, final diagnosis is "Diffuse Large B-cell Lymphoma of GC type". Although I have many years of experience as a general anatomic pathologist, this book really helps me to reach a higher level in the field of lymphoma diagnosis and avoid potential pitfalls, which may have significant adverse consequencies for both the patient and the pathologist. I highly recommend this book to my colleagues and residents.

Wonderful format that encourages student involvement; great for homeschooling.

Great science resource for the homeschooling family. This book is sold directly from Pearson as park of a homeschooling kit but lacks the manipulatives and lab supplies necessary to complete it. Despite that frustration, the format and the information contained are a hit with my kids. They love the idea of the workbook being combined into the text. The also love the regularity of the experiments spaced throughout the text. I am especially happy to have a scientifically accurate text to use with them.

A valuable collection of insight and wisdom from past generations of Americans.

I used to listen to my grandfather tell stories of how life was when he was growing up. The experiences he shared and wisdom he gained by living throughout those days, have stayed with me all my life. In a similar manner, Droughts and Dreams gives the chance to hear the stories of families who lived through The Great Depression in all corners of the country. It is very interesting to read how different regions dealt with the depression in different ways. Also, realizing how important a family's ability to be self-reliant was in how their depression experience affected them was an eye-opener.
It is important to read stories of those who lived through the Depression era as their numbers are ever dwindling and soon their insight and words of wisdom will be gone with them. I encourage folks to read these stories, ask older family members about their own experiences or those of their parents and grandparents as the memories will fade away someday. Stories are a way to preserve the past and continue learning from generations past. Droughts and Dreams is a valuable collection of accounts from the greatest generation who persevered and prevailed one of the darkest times in American history.

This book is hard to put down!
It's a collection of memoirs by people who lived through the Great Depression. Preppers and history buffs alike will enjoy it. You can read it first to last, or skip around reading chapters at random.
These are the stories of how people ingeniously made do with what they had when they had nothing. Some were able to grow their food. Some worked what little work there was to be had.
People went hungry, and lost their homes and businesses. Many led nomadic lifestyles (sometimes via horse and wagon!), because they were looking for something better. But somehow they survived through tragedies and triumphs.
Interspersed throughout the book are photographs of the era, recipes and home remedies.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who would like to get some real life glimpses into that dark time in American history.

Excellent read that gave me a renewed energy to learn more skills!

After reading Droughts and Dreams I have a renewed energy for prepping and learning self sufficient skills. This is a good reminder of why I need to keep on keeping on with what I am doing and to not grow weary. The younger generation would benefit greatly from reading and hearing these stories of what times were really like. In this age of everything being instant and electronic the younger generation has completely lost sight of what it is like to grow and provide their own food. I will be adding this book into my children's reading selection this school year so they can have more understanding for why we do the things we do to learn skills and be debt free.

This text is great for an overall view of anthropology and how it relates to today. Classmates are able to have great discussions about how we see cultures today and changes, or very little change, has come along through the centuries. Other college professors would probably find this a good one to use.
