This book is an invaluable addition to the available literature. Never before has so much useful information about the physiology and biology of greenhouse plants and their growth been assembled in one book. Hanan has combed the literature, inclucing very recent developments, with a fine-tooth comb. The over 1700 reference citations alone are worth the price of the book.This is the reference book for those who want to understand the whys and wherefores of plant growth under greenhouse conditions, who recognize the complexities of the factors at work, and are willing to make the effort to make use of the scientific information that is available. If it's available, it's in this book--clearly and concisely presented,with many graphs and illustrations. In addition, it contains much useful information about sensors and controls for climate control and promotion of growth in greenhouse environments.

A little "guide" that WORKS (if you let it)

I LOVE THIS BOOK!!!! About 11 years ago a series of events took place that left me emotionally, spiritually, and psychologically drained. I literally felt like things were hopeless. Then I got the paperback version of this book...and I mean it when I say it helped change my daily life.
I followed the author's suggestions (I was willing to try anything): I held the book in my two hands, held the problem or dilemma in my mind, meditated a bit on it, let my mind (and body) be still...then closed my eyes, made my request in a question form...and opened the book. I would always open it and only look at the page that I "felt" I was being led to by one of my fingers.
Most of the time I was amazed: the quotation on the page TRULY referred to my problem and gave me some insight. And I (more often than not) acted on it. Once in a while I'd get an answer that didn't seem like an answer, so I'd reframe the question and start the process again.
Years later I gifted this book to someone in trouble. And I truly missed not having it. Then, last month, I bought it AGAIN...this time in hardcover.
I STRONGLY recommend this book. Even if you read it from cover to cover (which is not really how it is designed to be used) you'd gain a wealth of insight, since the quotations -- from yogis, to Eileen Cassidy, to the Bible, to Walt Whitman -- are the BEST to help steer your thinking (and some say guide your intuition) towards helpful, often healing solutions.
This is a small but potent book. Great to read. Great to use as a little voice that will answer your questions as you randomly turn to a page after a bit of meditation. And, most of all, GREAT to GIFT to friends, family or someone who's facing some difficult challenges. Once you use this book you'll never want to be without it.

A few years ago my husband and I separated and later that same year I lost my best friend (my mother) to cancer. Not long after, I was given this book and I have kept it next to my bed ever since. It is a wonderful compulation of wise words that have given me strength, peace, acceptance and the understanding of inner wisdom that we all have, if we care to look. "Dr. Gabor Takacs has done it again and in much better fashion.  This book is well-worthy and much improved successor to the author’s previous volume on sucker rod pumping. Size of the book, almost 600 pages, may appear daunting, however, the right balance of academic and practical discussions in this book makes it equally accessible to university students, practicing engineers, and field personnel. The language, illustrations and examples are useful to experienced practitioner while easy to follow for a casual observer of this important artificial lift form. The book starts with basics on petroleum production engineering and after detailed coverage on equipment and components; it focuses on design workflows from empirical to API through wave equation based approaches. Next the book covers well analysis techniques that help answer question like how do I get most out of the system that I have now without significant CAPEX/OPEX inputs. I would have preferred more coverage on application challenges like severely dog-legged and/or horizontal wells, solids and gas handling, and rapidly changing production environment. In the closing, the book covers the long stroke pumping application for optimal production in challenging conditions like gassy, deep and relatively higher volume wells. About the Author
Gabor Takacs is a professor and was head of the Petroleum Engineering Department at the University of Miskolc, Hungary from 1995 to 2012. He has more than 35 years of teaching and consulting experience in the production engineering field. He was acting director of the Petroleum Engineering program at The Petroleum Institute in Abu Dhabi, UAE from 2007 to 2010, and taught at Texas Tech University from 1988 to 1989. He is also currently a technical editor for an oil and gas journal, and received the Society of Petroleum Engineers Distinguished Lecturer award for 1995-96. Gabor regularly teaches short courses internationally and is a well-known consultant and instructor on production engineering and artificial lift topics. Gabor earned an MS and PhD degree in petroleum engineering, both from the University of Miskolc.
