So helpful!

I truly think all of these "Success Q & A" books are essential study tools for me and my nursing school family. All of us who had this book did exceptionally well on our first Mental Health Nursing exam last week!! The book is laid out very clearly and the rationales are explained in such a way that when you see a similar question on the exam, you understand why each answer is right and wrong.

The only thing to watch out for is that 2 of my nursing school friends had gotten a book that was printed incorrectly with no Chapter 13 on Schizophrenia, which of course was on our first exam! I was able to let them borrow mine, but just make sure to check your book when you first receive it!

Not helpful for the ANCC certification exam

I just took the ANCC psych nurse certification exam and although I did pass I can honestly say that this book did not help in the least. The questions on the exam were nothing like the question a in this book. Review side effects/ lab normals of clorzaril and lithium and review how to address Asian and American Indian culture and you'll be more prepared for the exam than answering all the questions in this book.

This book is perfect for preparing for exams! Especially if your teacher uses NCLEX style questions. This book is organized in sections ,so it is easy to focus on topics relevant to being what is covered in your class and on exams. This book provides rationales for all of the answer choices so you can see what you did right and wrong. I do not know what I would do without his book. I will definitely be purchasing the other books in this series as a study aide for my classes. This book helps teach you how to apply concepts.

All in the Family

I'm on a number of mailing lists for free and bargain books on Amazon, and Cheri Verset's "Open Door Policy Taboo" appeared on one of them a while ago. The description frankly piqued my curiosity, both as to this book's particular subject matter and as to the contents in general of Amazon's erotica section. Although I really wasn't sure what to expect, I was pleasantly surprised by Verset's literary talent and sense of humor.

"Taboo" is a short story some 20 pages long with a pretty basic plot that sounds like an extended version of an old farmer's daughter joke. The narrator, Jasper, an 18-year-old boy, decides to get away from home for the summer before he goes off to college, so he goes to live on his aunt and uncle's farm in the boonies. The place is so remote it doesn't even have Internet service or cell phone reception, and, seemingly, the only form of entertainment is an old over-the-air TV set. So, Jasper spends his free time fantasizing about his gorgeous cousin and his older but equally gorgeous aunt. Then, one night, he discovers the meaning of the story's title: (a) the doors in the house stay open at all times, and (b) his aunt and cousin are very, very friendly. What follows is pretty much every physical act that Verset could fit into a 20-page story. The end.

Erotica, like humor, is in the eye of the beholder, or reader in this case. I wasn't particularly "moved" by the nonstop fun and games that take up the second half of the story, but others might be. What did impress me was the overall quality of the writing and the seemingly tongue-in-cheek attitude Verset has to her subject matter. Verset is a decent writer, and the book is easy to read, without the myriad errors that often plague self-published works on Amazon. Further, she knows how to turn a phrase every now and then. For example, at one point the Internet-less Jasper laments, "After a few days offline, I knew that if civilization ever crumbled and the Internet didn't survive, people would go insane from the porn withdrawal." Not Jane Austen, to be sure, but not all four-letter words and grunts and groans either (although there are plenty of those in the story as well).

In the second half of the story, as the action gets down to the nitty gritty, I had the distinct impression that Verset was engaging in a game of "can you top this" with her readers. From one page to the next, it seemed as if she was consciously upping the scale of kinkiness in the story. She also has a bit of fun with the taboo aspects of the story as she makes a point of having Jasper's cousin tell him that she's adopted and that she never did anything untoward until she turned 18. The rather breezy way that Verset treats these revelations is an indication of her overall playful tone in the story.

Since I don't have a lot to compare "Taboo" to, other than my recollections of "Letters to Penthouse" I read years earlier, I'm not sure how to rate the story. It was certainly better written and more entertaining than I thought it would be. However, one of the factors I take into consideration in rating a book is the value readers receive for the money. Although I got "Taboo" for free, Verset now charges $2.99 for the book, which in my mind is extremely high for a 20-page story it might take ten minutes to read. Of course, putting it delicately, this story has more of repeat reading value than most on Amazon, but I just don't think the story warrants such a price. So, on overall quality (especially for this type of writing), I would give the book four stars, but I have to deduct a star for the elevated price tag. For readers who don't mind paying $2.99 for this type of material, "Taboo" is about as good as you're likely to find.

Cheri Verset knows how to push all the right taboo buttons, and this story is no exception. A sexy older woman, a younger, lusty man, and a family relationship that makes it all so very naughty. This was both hot and wild. Loved it!

Amazon's main categorization has this way off! Lesbian?! Just no, this was all wrong and not what I was expecting. I began reading it (obviously didn't read the description) and imagined the protagonist was a woman and when I found out it was a guy, I was already thinking this has to be miscategorised, but one thing that is clear, is that it IS incest taboo, relatable to porn and while it was partly hot at times, it just fails as a whole.

Kleiner (Ph.D., Columbia University) is the author or co-author of the 10th, 11th, 12th, 13th, 14th, and 15th editions of GARDNER'S ART THROUGH THE AGES: A GLOBAL HISTORY, as well as the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd editions of GARDNER'S ART THROUGH THE AGES: A CONCISE HISTORY, and more than 100 publications on Greek and Roman art and architecture, including A HISTORY OF ROMAN ART, also published by Cengage. He has taught the art history survey course for more than three decades, first at the University of Virginia and, since 1978, at Boston University, where he is currently professor of art history and archaeology. From 1985 to 1998, he was editor-in-chief of the American Journal of Archaeology. Long acclaimed for his inspiring lectures and dedication to students, Professor Kleiner won Boston University's Metcalf Award for Excellence in Teaching, as well as the College Prize for Undergraduate Advising in the Humanities in 2002, and he is a two-time winner of the Distinguished Teaching Prize in the College of Arts and Sciences Honors Program. In 2007, he was elected fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London, and, in 2009, in recognition of lifetime achievement in publication and teaching, fellow of the Text and Academic Authors Association.

Gardner's Art Through the Ages: Non-Western Perspectives

I regularly assign this book for a Non-Western Humanities class. I have read most of the comparable texts out there, and this text is the best in terms of cultural background information and clear writing style. The choice of artwork is thoughtful and provides a good overview to each culture. My students generally give me excellent reviews of the textbook. Highly recommended for university instruction.

Extremely Useful

I used the beginning of this book for my Art of Asia class and found it very helpful. The diction is not complicated so one is able to quickly read through the passages and get the information down. For quizzes, going through the passage a second time really helped in understanding what I read. It was, however, a lot smaller than I anticipated for the price, so I recommend purchasing it used. There are lots of color pictures to balance out the small text, great for those who get bored and distracted easily while reading, such as myself. Overall, if needed for a class, I would definately buy it.

it's a shame that the publisher spoils a good book.

This refers to the kindle edition: the book is deceptively advertised for a low price, while the price is actually for rental. It is clear to me, but my wife and daughter didn't see this. More frustrating is that the book is full of gray squares that are images blocked for copyright reasons. This is an outrageous, unacceptable, unjustifiable practice. The publisher should secure the copyright or not publish something in the first place.
Not to mention that for anybody trying to get this book for a college or precollege student it is an extremely confusing collection of similar titles, various editions for different territories. We spent a couple of weeks emailing back and forth with the teacher trying to figure out which one is the exact edition that the teacher requested. We ended buying three versions and still not sure if it is exactly the same edition.
The price is overinflated cannot be justified by selling a 70 year old book talking about 1000 year old stuff.
