It is wonderful to see and hear a man who has given his life to teaching through the whole Bible, and there is nothing I see in Pawson that says he is in it for gain of any kind. I think he is right on with this concept of leadership. I listened to his series on this topic on youtube. Pawson is down to earth, with a great respect for the scriptures, and for women, by the way. If you think you would disagree with him on this - check him out on youtube, it can't hurt, and maybe you'll want to read a more thorough treatment of the subject,

Led by Commandant Pat Quinlan, A Company found themselves tasked with protecting the European population at Jadotville, a small mining town in the southern Congolese province of Katanga. It fell to A Company to protect those who would later turn against them. On September 13th, 1961, the bright morning air of Jadotville was shattered by the sound of automatic gunfire. The men of A Company found their morning mass parade interrupted, and within minutes they went from holding rosaries to rifles as they entered the world of combat. This was to be no Srebrenica; though cut off and surrounded, the men of Jadotville held their ground and fought. This is their story.

The Heros of A company

I read this book when it was first published and as an Irish soldier who has served over seas I whole heartedly recommend it. This book tells a story of a company of Irish soldiers far from home and way outside their comfort zone being ordered to protect people who hate them and all they stand for. Declan Power is to be praised for bringing this epic event in Irish army and UN history back to life. If you are interested in real soldiers and real history this is the book for you.

Remarkable story well told

Siege at Jadotville is the story of the remarkable group of soldiers who made up A Company, 35th Irish Infantry Battalion, and the intelligence, bravery, and skill they exhibited under dire circumstances in the Congo in 1961. Declan Power provides an excellent analysis of the tangled United Nations and African politics in the early 60s that led to a brutal and avoidable ambush of the Irish UN forces. In an untenable situation, with their fate determined by ignorant and arrogant politicians several continents away, these soldiers, under the leadership of an outstanding group of officers and non-comms, fought to the end with an unwavering sense of duty. With Siege at Jadotville, Power brings this exceptional group of men some of the historic justice they so richly deserve but were denied for fifty years.

A good read from a civilian point of view as it explains why it happened what they were doing there in the first place, however from a soldier's point of view it was lacking the grip a good action filled book has for it's reader. None the less a 4.5 star from me.

Equipment covered ranged from small arms to various types of Artillery (i.e., Field, Heavy, Coastal, Flak, Anti-Tank, Railway, etc). Other equipment covered include Rockets, mines & demolition charges. Highly recommended.

Best book on the subject

I bought my copy new from the book store years ago. Pictures of every handgun, rifle, and artillery piece used in WW2 complete with decriptions. There are no tanks or vehicles in this book. Even though the book is over 30 years old, it's still a solid reference book on the subject.

Puts Chaucer & His Tales in Context

I just finished reading all the Canterbury Tales in middle English but with plenty of help. One of my critical guides was Helen Cooper's excellent "Oxford Guides to Chaucer, the Canterbury Tales."

Each tale is examined in terms of its date, genre, sources, structure, themes, context and style. The writing is lively, opinionated and informed, the information is rich, varied and though-provoking. Some of the tales struck me as facile or crude but once I read this companion, I was able to get much deeper appreciation for what Chaucer was doing with his tales.

My only tiny quibble is that as a historian, I would have love more information about the times, the social changes, the political events and the religious controversies that I only get a glimpse at in these tales. But the Canterbury Tales here are treated as literature not history. Otherwise, the book would be at least twice as long and longer a companion but a overwhelming treatise in it's own right.
