I have a number of books on the subject of botanical illustration and all have some excellent information but if I had to limit
By Karen W
The book says it is a "practical introduction" and it is exactly that. The instructions for each lesson are detailed and clear. Perhaps more importantly the guidelines for critiquing what you have done are equally helpful. I have a number of books on the subject of botanical illustration and all have some excellent information but if I had to limit my library to just one book this one would be the one.

Evolutionist Treatise
By Edith R. Church
I remember this book from my childhood. I plan to order a copy to send to Sarah Palin, since I understand that she wants to outlaw the teaching of evolution, in favor of creationism. Well, I am now a creationist, but the splendid data in this book cannot be discounted.

An overview of the history of vertebrates
By JerryD
This work is an excellent overview of the vast sum of information known about vertebrates. It's concise but a complete coverage of the subject, shedding light on many of the theories and controversies regarding various aspects of the subject. Romer avails himself of embryologic information, as well as geologic, to shed light on the development of these animals. He sheds enough light on the development of various anatomic areas to be interesting but not tedious for the novice reader. For this subject -- this is a great intro.

the Old Testament of the evolutionist
By Cryo Dunce
This book is, in the truest sense, "old school". Few occasions exist in which one may open an aged tome and receive such enlightenment. It turns out that Nature is more fantastic than all the worlds religions. The more so because, unlke religion, evolution and the morphology of life is real.

Review
Praise for E. Van Lowe's Falling Angels Saga

"A thrilling suspense / mystery / fantasy book mixed with reality and some romance
scenes that will get you hooked up till the end." -Lalaine Faye, Lalaine's Fiction Book
Reviews

"Boyfriend From Hell was a great surprise. I didn't know what to expect before reading
it but it was a fast and fun read that made me laugh more than once. What made
Boyfriend from Hell unique to me was the sometimes tongue-in-cheek tone it had. It's a
great YA that's also poking fun at some of the predictable Young Adult clichés.
If you like paranormal YA but sometimes find yourself rolling your eyes at the way the characters are acting,
you'll love this book too." -Lisa Choboter, Cold Moon Violet Books

"E. Van Lowe's fluid and masterful writing made this book one that I needed to finish."
 -Elizabeth Talbott, Fishmuffins of Doom

"E. Van Lowe does a great job of capturing teenage angst, dating woes, and parental
issues without over-doing it. Earth Angel was just as fun to read as Boyfriend From
Hell." -Nicole Etolen, Pretty Opinionated

"I just finished the last sentence and I'm left stung that I have to wait for the final book
to come out. I can't wait! I loved the first book, and was so excited by a story of a girl
battling Satan.  I mean, how cool is that?" -Freda Mans, Freda's Voice

About the Author

E. Van Lowe books have enchanted readers with beautiful love stories like the one between an angel and a normal girl, while also taking readers to hell and back (Boyfriend From Hell, and The Falling Angels Saga). His books have intrigued readers, inviting them into the world of enchanted water nymphs, and evil sea trolls, while asking the question "Do you believe in soulmates." (The Beautiful Creatures of Beverly Hills series). More books are due out soon, plus the start of a new series about a teenage girl with a gift for raising the dead, and laying the risen dead back to rest (Hollyweird).  Despite this proclivity toward the paranormal, E is a pretty normal guy... well, as normal as one can be having Godzilla as their pet.  Visit him at his internet home evanlowe.com, and while you're there, grab a free book.

All is now right in that little part of her world!...Or is it?
By Sapphyria
Here is the last section of my review from of Book 2, Earth Angel:

Megan's former friend, Erin, transfers to another school and refuses to talk to Megan at all; angry because she blames Megan for Matt's death. She also befriends some ruffians from her new school. This particular plot line isn't explored in Book 2 but I hope it is in Book 3.

Guy, now that his wings are clipped and he's grounded to earth, spends as much time with Megan as possible. Since Suze isn't fond of him, it's mainly at school. Megan never reveals that she is in possession of The Book Of Calls to Guy but he eventually finds out...after it's too late. The demon obsessed with finding The Book Of Calls has tricks up his sleeve, requiring Megan to save the boy she loves.

"Heaven Sent" is Book 3 in the Falling Angels saga by E. Van Lowe. These have been the most entertaining, easily read novels. I've enjoyed each and every one so far.

We find Megan attempting to pick up the pieces of her shatter romance and life - Really!....She is. Or maybe not so much. Even though her boyfriend, Guy, is a grounded angel, at the end of Book 2, he leaves her and ascends back up to heaven with the beautiful but extremely broken angel, Roxanne. She discovers that her former best friend, Erin, is engaged and the wedding is the day of Megan's birthday. Her current best friend, Maudine, is preoccupied with her boyfriend, Curtis. And to top it all off, Harrison, a demon hunter, who has become Megan's protector, and just like a brother, has been summoned to Australia to deal with an emergency.

She also has some powers manifesting that have been placed within her. Powers that are triggered by her anger. Powers that she can't control.

Upon arrival at home, after meeting with Harrison about is impending departure, Megan discovers a grey and white kitten waiting for her on the front porch. Harrison provided a cute little hellcat to watch over Megan, since there wasn't anyone else who could. You read that right....a hellcat. Yep, I'm going to just let you figure out that little bit all by yourself.

When Megan decides it's time to confront Erin and find out why, at the age of 16, she has decided to marry Danny, she gets a little more than expected. Erin is cold and sarcastic - not anywhere near the girl that Megan grew up with. As she's leaving the establishment where she found Erin, Erin's fiance and two of his friends chase her down to the bus stop. And here to save the day is - Guy! She thought she'd lost him forever, and here he is, her knight in shining armor. All is now right in that little part of her world!

If only if it were that easy and uncomplicated in Megan's world. She, with the help of Matt (who is, indeed, in hell but providing clues to Megan in her dreams at night), discovers a sinister plot involving Erin, herself, and of course Satan. And a sinister plot that proves Guy may not be the guy she remembers from a couple months ago.

I tell you, this girl cannot catch a break.

This novel, heck - this series - has an excellent story line that just keeps getting better! I devoured this book in about 4 hours. I couldn't put it down once I started. There are twists, turns, and gripping emotions. Just when we think we know what's going on, the rug gets pulled out and things just crumble. We get to watch Megan mature a little bit more as she grasps the use of her powers, and the situations involving Maudine and Erin.

If you haven't read this series, I highly recommend it.

Another Awesome Addition To The Series!
By N. Medina
Ever since her previous battle with Satan, Megan has had to deal with the loss of her beloved boyfriend, Guy. Having sustained life-threatening injuries, he and Roxanne were sent back to the heavens to recuperate, much to her dismay. Every day, she tells herself that she's surviving, and making do with the choices she's made in the past. Yet she knows that's not exactly true. Her heart still clamors for the forbidden, even though she knows she shouldn't.

When Harrison swings by, and tells her that he needs to depart on an errand he needs to take care of, Megan wonders if she'll be able to withstand his loss, as well. His parting gift gives her a bit of solace, however, yet she knows it's not enough to allow her to make do with the situation at hand. Deep inside, she knows she needs to confront Erin if she's to set their differences aside. Unfortunately, her former best friend won't make things that easy for her.

When it becomes apparent that Erin might be in danger, she comes to the realization that the battle between her and Satan isn't quite over. He still has a few eggs up his sleeve, and he's not ready to go down without another fight. Erin's been running with the wrong sort, unfortunately, and they're not willing to give up their claim on her anytime soon. Most especially, since they know it'll bring Megan to their very doorstep.

An impromptu attack brings Guy back into the fray. She's grateful for the rescue, and is no longer afraid to show him how she feels. Unbeknownst to her, appearances are definitely deceiving.

With time running out, Megan knows she'll need to decipher the clues that have been left behind for her to find. Her dreams are the key, only if she'll allow herself to see the deeper meaning in the messages she's being given. Her life, Erin's, and that of her beloved family and friends are stake. Somehow, she'll need to gain the upper hand if she's to beat Satan at his own game. The question is, how can she do that when her heart is still broken in more ways than one?

This was honestly another awesome addition to the series. I enjoyed it immensely. It's great to see Megan get a little closure to certain aspects of her life. There were quite a few twists and turns that were definitely unexpected, but that's the beauty of a good book, right? Will Megan get her heart's desire, once and for all, I wonder? That definitely remains to be seen. So can't wait for the final book of this series!

Please Note: I received a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Unpredictably Fantastic!
By Seirra Poirier
A review copy was provided for an honest review. Heaven Sent was even better than the last two books in the series, there was more plot twists you won't even begin to predict and than there's Megan's darker side that's explored. This new side of her is one that's fascinatingly exciting and there's her new satanic powers to look forward to! I loved seeing how that played into everything--it's a real game-changer! Megan tries to move on only she finds that nearly impossible when her friend's life is at stake. Erin's dug herself even deeper into the pits of hell as she continues to spiral down a deep dark hole that she may not make it out of. Being the person that she is Megan Barnett won't let that happen so she makes it her mission to save her. Megan becomes everything that I've been waiting to see her become: independent, fierce, and utterly determined. I loved watching her develop into such a strong character who was willing to take risks for what she believed in. There was a lot of fantastically interesting works at play in Heaven Sent which definitely made it leagues better than the previous books.

Heaven Sent starts off 2 months later from where Earth Angel last left off picking up at the end of Megan's school year. She defeated Satan and Beelzebub but hell's not through with her yet, how could it be? Guy hasn't returned or left word ever since she received a cryptic letter that doesn't seem to make sense but she has a feeling that maybe she hasn't seen the last of him and hopes that to be true even if those thoughts are futile. Maudrina in my eyes stepped up a lot in this book and became her own character with a strong voice and an outstanding personality. She really has a pivotal role in helping Megan remain sane and pushing her through her dark times especially when everything seems hopeless. I was sad to see less of Harrison but I enjoyed what role he played immensely, he's really fun and has such wit about him. I also loved Megan's cat - the idea that her pet isn't quite what she seems is amazing. Cats are my favorite and what an imaginatively creative roll it played. Each character in Heaven Sent just grows additional layers of depth that have so many different sides to them and that was a great welcome to the series.

At first I couldn't really see where this book was headed because I thought the plot was going to wind up in a totally different direction but it really took me by surprise. It gets really twisted and it's a crazy ride full of demons, Satanists, and angels among other things. This novel was so compelling and I find myself really wanting to get my hands on the final installment of this saga; I'm hoping for a neatly tied up conclusion so I can have some finality because this series always has some loose strings that can unravel and turn up a new chaos. Heaven Sent was a very enjoyable read with great unpredictable twists and turns therefore earning a 4.5/5 rating. Bring on the last book!

Yeats, The Man And The Masks, by Richard Ellmann

“The book helps fill in the picture of a complex and fascinating man…indispensable for the serious study of the subject.”—Edmund Wilson, The New Yorker

The most influential poet of his age, Yeats eluded the grasp of many who sought to explain him. In this classic critical examination of the poet, Richard Ellmann strips away the masks of his subject: occultist, senator of the Irish Free State, libidinous old man, and Nobel Prize winner.

From the Back Cover
Yeat's life was one of the most complex of all the poets' in its outer and inner events. Mystical concerns - involvement with spiritualism, construction of a transcendental world system in A Vision - fitted among and around an unusually active involvement in public affairs, as a founder of the Abbey Theatre and as a senator of the new Irish Free State.

About the Author
Richard Ellmann was Goldsmiths Professor at Oxford University and Woodruff Professor at Emory University. He achieved world fame for his biography of Joyce and wrote many scholarly and critical works, including two on Yeats.

William Butler Yeats is generally considered to be Ireland s greatest poet, living or dead, and one of the most important literary figures of the twentieth century. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1923.

Casting a Cold Eye
By A. R. Paterson
THE definitive, open, and engaging study of the man T.S.Eliot declared the greatest poet of his age. Richard Ellman is no longer with us, but this is a monument of Yeats biography and criticism, the book which all subsequent biographers try to rewrite. The text itself, written as it was amidst a flurry of uncollected papers in the forties and with the co-operation of W.B.'s widow George, is understandably reticent about some elements of the poet's private life, notably his early lovers and extra-marital affairs; but the introduction printed with this new edition fills in many of the blanks, and gives the reasoning for Ellman's assertion that Yeats's affair with Maud Gonne was indeed finally consummated, confirming a suspicion hitherto based only on ambiguous references in letters and the poem 'A Man Young and Old'. Most of all, however, it is Ellman's sensitive and insightful treatment of Yeats's at once shy and self-possessed nature that impresses; the writer will never have a more accurate critic, and the man never a more sincere and biting appraisal of his contradictions. This is the place to start if you are interested in Yeats: you may not find the book or the man that you were expecting, an easy dreamy life of lost women and lake isles, but the portrait is truer, and the artistic genius more clearly delineated than in any other book on the subject, and there have been many. Ellman went on to write the definitive lives of James Joyce and Oscar Wilde; that his first essay in literary biography stands comparison with these is its own testament.

Biograph Master
By Arch Llewellyn
Ellmann was only 30 when he published this in 1948, less than 10 years after Yeats's death; he was the first biographer to see Yeats's papers in their chaotic entirety. What an astounding job! You'd think this would read like a warm-up for his later magisterial biographies of Joyce and Wilde, but "The Man and the Masks" holds its own against those works, giving a sensitive, economical portrait of an unusually fractured poet.
Ellmann stresses Yeats's life-long effort to forge his thoughts into a unified system in the teeth of inbred skepticism, shyness and vacillation. He draws a discreet curtain over the sexual parts of Yeats's life but compensates with a keen understanding of the courage it took for this diffident, ill-read & dreamy man to make himself by fits and starts into a modern poet. My favorite parts of the book were the sections where Ellmann compares earlier drafts of the poems to the printed versions, showing just how hard-won Yeats's genius was. He tempers a critical eye towards Yeats's excesses--the wild mysticism, the Fascist sympathies, the arrogant public demeanor--with an understanding of Yeats's deep need for masks. According to Ellmann, Yeats's theories and systems weren't dogmas so much as postures he assumed to fulfill his own desire for a certainty of belief he never quite attained. Ellmann shows how that drive shaped the poems and ultimately rescued them from the deadness certitude would have brought. A classic study and an excellent starting-point for further reading on Yeats's life and work.

Yeats - Magic, Masks, and Muses
By Stephen Hammack
"Yeats: The Man and The Masks" (1979, W.W. Norton & Co., New York) by Richard Ellman is a landmark study of the greatest poet of the twentieth century. As a literary biography, it does far more to explain how Yeats continually recreated himself as a poet than would a mere historical biography only full of facts. First published in 1948, this book is based on the unlimited access Yeats' widow gave Ellman to literally thousands of unpublished papers in the decade after the poet's death, and is full of keen philosophical insight into the poet's life and writings.

Yeats' life and poetry were most influenced by two people - firstly by his father, who consciously sought to educate and shape him into a poet, and secondly by the woman who became the great love of his life. John Butler Yeats was a minor artist of the Victorian period who, although he could never quite achieve the visions he set for himself as a painter, was a great lover of the arts, and imparted his creative gifts to all his children. His was a very strong personality, and it dominated the family like an iron glove. Although they did not get along well in his formative years, Yeats acknowledged his father's very positive impact on his life and ideas in later years. Maud Gonne, on the other hand, was Yeats' partner in many of his early plans and schemes to resurrect Irish nationalism, theatre, and literature. He fell desperately in love with this tall, wild woman, but she never requited that love and broke his heart repeatedly. He pursued her for over a decade, and when she married another it looked at first as if he would never recover. But Yeats did survive, and his poetry was much richer for the experience of loving, and eventually outgrowing the self-absorbed Maud Gonne.

Some poets prefer simplicity and are not overly complicated, being fond of wine, woman, and song. But Yeats (who definitely loved the first two, but had no ear at all for music) was a complex man of immense yearnings and dreams, and involved himself in numerous movements and causes throughout his life. He was, first and foremost, one of the driving forces behind the Irish literary renaissance. He was also the co-founder of Dublin's Abbey Theatre, which had an immense impact on drama by providing a place for Irish playwrights "to bring upon the stage the deeper emotions of Ireland." He was an Irish Nationalist who dreamed of an Ireland independent of Britain, but who thought that violence was not the solution. He later came to see the that the "terrible beauty" of the Irish Easter Rebellion of 1916 was, in fact, a bloody means to a greater end. Yeats was also a magician and mystic who enthusiastically joined Madame Blavatsky's Theosophical Society, and later was an early member of the Order of the Golden Dawn - a Rosicrucian/Masonic-style occult society devoted to raising its members' consciousness to higher levels.

The Golden Dawn drew upon the Western kabbalistic and esoteric traditions, and his involvement had a great influence on both Yeats the Man and Yeats the Poet. For instance, he experimented with séances and automatic writing as a means of contacting the spirits he believed helped him unlock his latent powers as a poet and a magician. But his great breakthrough came after he married the patient and witty Georgie Hyde-Lees (whom he called George) as he neared his fiftieth year. It was Mrs. Yeats' great gift for automatic writing, and well as Yeats' dogged persistence, that allowed him to develop his system of symbols, and to become a far deeper poet than the simple lyricist he had been in his youth. Yeats' poetic vision of masks, his gyres (pronounced with a hard "g") - whirling spirals shaped like two intersecting triangles, his belief in his daimones (spirit guides or perhaps even muses), and his phases of the moon corresponding to levels of human awareness all sound very odd indeed and make one wonder if he was not mad. These ideas combined, however, to take his poetry to levels he had never before attained. Even more than these, the most important aspect of his poetic maturation was that he achieved what he called Unity of Being, and what others might call the Completeness of Character or Personality, by slowly combining the many and various sides of his psyche into a complete whole. Yeats thus forged himself into the great poet he had always longed to be, and achieved a much greater power with his written words than any other writer of his day and age.

As he grew into old age, Yeats became a revered figure and received many awards and prizes, but he was profoundly troubled by what he felt to be a lessening of his poetic powers. For someone who saw all art as "an expression of desire," these powers were inextricably interlinked with his libido, and so in 1934 at the age of 68, he underwent a new surgical operation called the Steinach operation. This procedure was evidently a variation on a vasectomy, and promised renewed vigour and strength to those who underwent the knife. Whether it was real or all in his mind, amazingly Yeats poetic ability rose phoenix-like and sustained him during the last five years of his life, years during which his wife George sustained, nursed, and humored him for the sake of his work and their love.

This early biography of Yeats strips away some of the intricate masks he created for himself - masks that he removed only for his closest family and friends. It is a vital literary biography for anyone seeking to understand how a minor Irish poet with some rather fantastic notions about magic and symbolism remade himself into the one of the greatest poets of all time. I recommend it primarily to those who enjoy literary biography, and who want to read in great detail how the life, loves, and poetry of W. B. Yeats were intricately and symbolically, intertwined.

Sanity doesn't stand a chance with Abel on your mind.. Perfect balance of dark & soulful..

TRUTHFUL

PERFECT.

From the first moment that I laughed out loud in chapter one, I KNEW this book will be one of those that I wouldn't be able to get over..

Have you ever started a book and felt straight away that the writing style was you? It just resonated so well with your own thoughts and POV that it was THAT easy to fall in love with it? Or that the story seemed to be heartbreaking, dark and sexy but funny at the same time? These are all some of the endless addictive qualities of READY, WILLING AND ABEL.

A girl that is too stressed and freaked out after she realizes what she thinks she isn't without a doubt not ready for: to become a mum. 13 pregnancy tests later she is at a breaking point of continuously telling herself that this could not be happening.. That it should not happen, least of all to her.. and just thinking about who was at the receiving end of this, only ever builds up a stronger headache..

Abel. A character that no matter what he says or does after his first chapter of being introduced to us, I will inhale every word that is his. It sounds weird I know, but just from seeing how he was describing Patience and his feelings for her, not to mention everyone else in his life, it kind of made me feel at ease with him? I felt like I could trust his own point of view no matter what. THAT type of connection with a fictional character is so damn hard to find, but Abel was just.. ugh.. I can't explain it but I loved everything that he stood for. I wont even start on his drool worthy sexy as hell looks or his dirty mind or even his bad boy attitude (mainly towards Patience) that I could only ever envy when it comes to those plain boys that find their way in my life. Sigh.. All those reality issues when getting engrossed with PERFECT fictional men.. Double Sigh.

The story is both dark, dealing with what happened with Abel's family and his extended family but also with how he always wishes that he would have been able to do something for the person who shot her.. It clearly wasn't a death shot but Abel still felt so much rage towards Tanner that he himself mentioned he would bring him back from his grave JUST so he could do some more damage.. That side shows an extremely important example in the way his feelings for her are anything but simple..

Patience regrets that night she spent with Abel 3 years ago but even worse she "hates" that she saw him once again a little while ago.

Now. She has no other choice but to live with her "mistakes".. though we do get to witness a relationship that grows so strongly, I could only wish that it was real. Abel doesn't know about Patience secret of their little one and once he finds out? There better be mercy for the wrath to unfold when a man claims HIS girl and is looking to repair the damage he caused..

Before, it was about them and only them. Their feelings, emotions, thoughts, desires.. NOW. Now they have another life that needs attention..

What will they do? What could possibly happen when 2 souls who are already too tainted to be fixed are brought back together?

Patience is anything but what her name suggests. Sassy, with an attitude, knows what she wants, isn't scared to stand up to him, and is now scared of what her life and the growing one she carries, will end up as..

Abel is the cocky, alpha male, with a sexy attitude to match his god like features but he has a heart of gold, especially when it comes to her.

She is his weakness, she always has been. But can he ever prove to her how much she means to him? Will she forgive and accept him?

There were so many twist and turns, so many bumps and even more emotional breakdowns. I loved every aspect of this gorgeous story. It was dark but that part was balanced out but the humor, it was also sexy as sin but heartfelt at the same time.. In few words, READY, WILLING AND ABEL was everything that you wish it was but more unexpected in only the best way possible!

Thank you so much Sarah O'Rourke for the ARC!! I haven't read the first 2 books in this series and even thought I know this particular one is a standalone, I am one clicking the others!!! I NEED more and more there shall be. Until next time, please create more Abel's... at least one extra so I can have my very own.. Uh yeah. You guys will understand my "normal self" once you see for yourself how sane you WONT be when delving into the world occupied by Abel.. You have been warned!

who unfortunately does not favour her namesake but is the ultimate bad girl with a heart
By Nicole McCurdy
There were so many elements of this story that made me instantly recall all of those fabulous sixties Doris Day and Rock Hudson romances; the witty repartee, the aggressive banter that borderlines on overt flirtation, the comedic timing and ridiculous and hilarious circumstances or problems that occurred-except in Ready, Willing and Abel we have a very sexy, very dominant heterosexual hero in the form of attorney Abel Turner and an incredibly potty mouthed and fierce heroine in the shape of one Patience McKinnon, who unfortunately does not favour her namesake but is the ultimate bad girl with a heart.

Sarah O'Rourke is a pseudonym, comprised of two very talented and very funny authors who, not only manage to grasp the importance of sexual chemistry in their lead characters but also that a fabulous support system in the form of the McKinnon family women and their better halves can bring out the best in a story. They manage to bring forth some of the best sex scenes I've ever read in a novel and the next time the fair comes to town I DEFINITELY have to try my hand at the type of Ferris Wheel shenanigans these two get up to. Oh. My. Lord! Scorching.

The great thing about Sarah's books, is that they are consistently chock full of drama, hysterics, suspense, fantastic and imaginative sex scenes and that all important element of love and spark of passion. And what a love story this one is. One night of unbridled passion that has a startling and positive effect on the feuding Patience and Abel's lives. Patience was awesome and just as complex and fierce and independent as always and Abel was utterly incredible, he had so much passion and fight in him and love for his wee 'hellion'. I'm absolutely dying for Honor and Zeke's story and I hope there are a few other characters going to get their own book too but this is seriously one series that I have loved and admired and become addicted to.

Great Read!
By TNel17
If you have not read the below I would recommend reading those books(s) first
Cain's Salvation (Passion in Paradise: The Men of the McKinnon Sisters, #1)
Hard as Stone (Passion in Paradise: The Men of the McKinnon Sisters, #2)

This is the third book in the series but can be read as a standalone.
Patience is the complete opposite of her name, she's full of sass and mouthy. She is not at all patient for anyone. She falls for the sexy Abel but he screws everything up. Three years later Abel's still trying to prove and show himself to the one woman he cares about. To do that though he'll have to knock all the walls Patience has up and that's not going to be a easy job. They are complete opposites, so this leads to some fighting in this love hate relationship. After one night together their lives change forever and as a reader I was drawn in and couldn't stop reading!
This book has the perfect blend of laughter, drama, and will capture your attention from beginning to the very end. I recommend this as well as going to the other books in series as well. You will not be disappointed.

Pearls on a String: Art in the Age of Great Islamic EmpiresFrom University of Washington Press

Pearls on a String presents the arts of historical Islamic cultures by focusing on specific people and relationships among cultural tastemakers, especially painters, calligraphers, poets, and their patrons. Through a series of chapters, the book spotlights certain historical moments from across the Islamic world. Each chapter pivots around patrons and their social networks. These independent sections allow different voices and perspectives to emerge, enabling the reader to see that Islamic societies are not monolithic but made up of a tapestry of individuals with distinct and varying views. Pearls on a String pays particular attention to individuals from different sectors of society, giving voice to anonymous artists and translators, merchants, and women of the harem. Islamic historical sources reinforce the book's themes of writing in Islamic societies, artistic patronage, biographical traditions, and human connectivity.

Pearls on a String: the epitome of beauty and fine scholarship
By Merrily Baird
In May 2013, the National Endowment for the Humanities made a gift to the Walters Art Museum in Baltimore that would help underwrite an exhibition drawn in part from its collection of Islamic art and manuscripts. The fruit of that investment can now be seen by a wide audience via a catalogue of exceptional beauty and expert scholarship. Titled "Pearls on a String: Artists, Patrons, and Poets at the Great Islamic Courts," this catalogue accompanies a show that opened at the Walters in November 2015 and will move on to the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco.

Both the catalogue and exhibition examine Islamic courts located in a geographic sweep from China, India, and Persia westward to Syria, Egypt, Turkey, and Spain. Throughout the emphasis is on human interaction among artists, poets, and court patrons in "webs of personal relationships." Each chapter uses a somewhat different lens, but short introductory essays pull the book together, and the Walters' curatorial approach allowed contributing scholars to play to their unique strengths. Topics dealt with in individual chapters are: ladies' ivories in 10th-century Spain; art, history, and science in the 13th-14th century Mongol Empire; the 14th-century sultan of Egypt and Syria; art and literature in Herat of 15th-century Persia; 16th-century Sanskrit texts in Mughal India; late 17th-century painting in Isfahan, Persia; and an 18th-century jeweled gun from the Ottoman Empire.

While the emphasis in "Pearls on a String" is on Islamic courts, multiple religious and foreign influences impacted these courts and only a portion of the art depicted in this book was created solely for religious purposes. On the literary front, as any reader of Sufi verse will know, references to worldly love and wine consumption were prominent, even if they were often metaphors for an ecstatic merging with the Divine. Readers desiring an even closer look at the patronage of one Islamic Sultan- Ibrahim Adil Shah II of Bijapur in India--can find it in "The Visual World of Muslim India: The Art, Culture and Society of the Deccan in the Early Modern Era." Readers desiring a fictional account, meanwhile, of Ottoman Empire court patronage can find it in "My Name is Red" by the Turkish Nobel Prize winner Orhan Pamuk.

A fresh perspective and fascinating insight into historic Islamic cultures - a must read!
By R. Goldberg
This exceptional collection of scholarly texts is a comprehensive overview of Islamic cultures and the persons who created and commissioned the objects that continue to tell stories across time. The book takes a nuanced approach by looking at Islamic history through a biographical lens. Reading the texts and becoming acquainted with the historical characters and their networks, readers will gain a novel perspective on the moments in time, that together, form the richly diverse and culturally vibrant history of the Islamic world. Students and scholars, as well as anyone with a curiosity or interest in Islamic art will find the essays in "Pearls on a String" a fascinating read.

Imperialism Past and Present, by Emanuele Saccarelli, Latha Varadarajan

After a long hiatus, when it was seemingly banished to the wilderness of esoteric academic debate, imperialism is back as one of the buzzwords of the day. In the past decade many have invoked it as an old specter only to nervously deny its contemporary applicability. A smaller, but highly significant minority has embraced it as a positive good - the only way out of the contemporary political impasse. Meanwhile, the term has continued to be applied to the most diverse range of economic, political, cultural and linguistic phenomena, as well as historical scope. From the Persian Empire of antiquity to contemporary American military operations in the Middle East; from China's ongoing economic penetration of Africa to the old Soviet domination of Eastern Europe, passing through every real or perceived form of "hierarchy" and "privilege", imperialism is now invoked with great frequency and even greater imprecision.

Imperialism Past and Present clarifies the prevailing confusion and provides a concise historical account of imperialism, explaining when and how it emerged and its relation to the colonialism and empires of the past. Should any sort of predatory foreign policy be regarded as imperialist? Does the seemingly universal concern for "humanitarianism" and human rights rule out the applicability of imperialism to contemporary politics? The book examines important theoretical debates about the origins and nature of imperialism, as well as the most significant and dramatic episodes in its actual history - from the 1884 Berlin Conference, through two World Wars, decolonization, and the end of the Cold War. As Emanuele Saccarelli and Latha Varadarajan argue in this provocative book, imperialism is hardly a political artifact. Rather it remains the mainspring of global instability and conflict today.

Review

"How did imperialism become such a decisive factor in modern history? This insightful book uses both history and economics to address that great question. Ranging from Joseph Conrad and Adam Smith to Rwanda and the Arab Spring, it sheds new light on a force that continues to shape the world." -Stephen Kinzer, author of The Brothers and All the Shaw's Men

"Imperialism Past and Present is essential reading for anyone interested in current events. A lucid book that returns a central category - imperialism - to our conversation about what otherwise appears to be random disasters in remote places." -Vijay Prashad, author of The Darker Nations: A People's History of the Third World

"This superbly written, researched and argued book enables us to understand contemporary international relations through the lens of historical continuities. All students and scholars of these issues will benefit from reading it." -Pádraig Carmody, author of The New Scramble for Africa

"A wonderfully frank, lucid and irreverent primer. Sweeping with historical command from Thucydides through King Leopold to Dien Bien Phu, it is uniquely powerful when demonstrating why recent U.S. and European adventures - the bombing of Serbia, the invasion of Libya, the Rwandan genocide - should be grouped with the classical imperialisms of old. Sharp, feisty, and, in spite of everything, filled with hope." -Timothy Brennan, author of Wars of Position: The Cultural Politics of Left and Right

"The concept of imperialism in international relations has fallen from academic fashion, but the practice of imperialism has continued uninterrupted. The post-2001 War on Terror has ushered in a whole new era of global interventions. Imperialism Past and Present does an excellent job of linking up present-day imperialism with earlier historical experiences, showing a broad continuity of imperial practices over long periods of time. This is a welcome addition to the international relations literature, bound to trigger much needed debate." -David Gibbs, author of First Do No Harm: Humanitarian Intervention and the Destruction of Yugoslavia

The Many Faces of Imperialism
By Michael Griswold
Imperialism Past and Present is an interesting book in that it attempts to outline why imperialism happened in the past and why it continues to happen in the present with the US invasions of Iraq and Afghanistan. To clarify, the imperialism of the 1800 and 1900’s is not the same imperialism that we witness today (If one in fact views this era as imperialistic). While the late 1800’s to 1960 imperialism was more about getting economic resources for the colonizer, the modern day imperialism seems to be more rooted in cultural and ideological grounds under liberalism. But the basic point is still the same: larger companies dominate weaker ones.

While I thought that the discussions dealing with how imperialism has changed over time were very interesting, the definitional soup that the average reader has to wade through in order to get to these discussions can be enough to drive one up the wall. I am thinking particular of the imperialism vs. colonialism debate, which while helpful tends to leave one confused. In the effort to so clearly define the terms of the debate, the debate itself gets lost in the trees.

This is a very good effort to link two hundred years of imperialism together in a relatively brief number of pages, but the definitional soup really drags the book and the reader down.

Imperialism Past and Present presents a great historical, political and economic analysis of Imperialism
By John Mark Shorack
Imperialism Past and Present presents a great historical, political and economic analysis of Imperialism. At the beginning, it follows a political theory analysis presenting what Imperialism is not, and then analyses previous ways Imperialism has been studied, including works by John Hobson and Vladimir Lenin, to then present their analysis of Imperialism from an economic, political and international perspective.

The following chapters of the book guide the reader through a timeline of Imperialism beginning in 1885 with the Berlin Conference, onto the Treaty of Versailles, The Second World War, The Cold War, and finally the 'War on Terror', while presenting a succinct account of Imperialism through all of these events.

"Imperialism Past and Present" was very interesting to read, and definitely worth it!
It helped me put all current events, news and wars into a clear historical and global perspective. Know when I speak of imperialism, and imperialist countries, I will know what I am talking about!

Hmmm
By Autamme_dot_com
Imperialism – like it or hate it, understand it or wonder what it really is – is brought under the watchful eye of the authors in this fairly specific book, which aims to mix history and international relations together and inform the curious, waiting reader.

It is just unfortunate that it failed to gain traction with this reviewer, since the subject is quite interesting on many levels. Imperialism as a term is being applied within many economic, political, cultural and linguistic subjects, yet quite a few people are confused about what it means and how we should view it or respond to it. This book aims to change that and provide a bit of authoritative knowledge infusion at the same time.

Unfortunately this is less likely to be a spontaneous “something different”-read for most. Even those who may find a benefit or a need to study it probably must to focus unnecessarily hard. It is by no means a bad book, yet it just felt a little bit too onerous, laboured and less inviting than it could have been. Fortunately the price is not too high; as an expensive book that you can possibly struggle to connect to might just lead to resentment and even less reader focus.

The central theme of the book is interesting and there are some insights there, so for many it could be worth the additional overhead to extract the knowledge. A general reader won’t get as much out of it; that may be a shame as with some remodelling it could have broader appeal without compromising on its content quality.

Otherwise, there is always a local library…
